Shopping malls form an integral part of any community, and Cresta Shopping Centre has definitely been at the centre of Randburg and surrounding areas for nearly 40 years. Playing a vital role in the growth and expansion of the community, a trip to the mall is often more than just a quick run to stock up on essentials. It serves as a catalyst for youngsters starting out in the job market; a one-stop-shop to cater to a variety of requirements; and even more importantly, the perfect place to meet with family and friends. The mall forms a big part of many people’s daily lives, which is why Cresta Shopping Centre prides itself in putting the needs of the community first.
Without the support of the community, a shopping centre cannot thrive. Cresta Shopping Centre believes in a successful symbiotic relationship with their customers, with a strong investment approach (“hand-up over hand-out”) to uplift and support the community that supports them. Education and skills development is a major focus of the Cresta Corporate Social Investment policy. This is evident and present through their partnership with Growing Champions.
The Growing Champions NPO is in the business of changing lives of children, youth and families living in risky environments. This mentorship programme, based in Northcliff – within the Cresta catchment area – focuses on developing individuals into their best versions through a 7-step programme, They focus on education, character and personal development, as well as sport and spiritual growth as a way to empower these “Growing Champions” to become Change Leaders. Their youth have led change in gender-based violence and basic education through their work and service in 2020. They are active contributors to society and with the right tools, are prepared to put in the necessary work on the ground. This mandate aligns perfectly with the Cresta Shopping Centre CSI response to being an active force in providing the community with wholesome and tangible activities which keep the youth safe and out of danger.
Extending their commitment to equipping Growing Champions with the right tools, Cresta Shopping Centre held a stationery collection drive over the December 2020 period. The initiative was set up with the intention to provide the children of Growing Champs with adequate supplies in preparation for the 2021 school year. The Back To School rush is often difficult to navigate, especially through these uncertain times, and Cresta Shopping Centre played a big part in ensuring parents and children of the community received the much-needed help to gear up for the coming academic year. The stationery drive was a huge success, collecting more than 700 items of stationery and school supplies valued over R11,000, for the kids at Growing Champions.
On the joyous occasion of distributing the stationery packs to Growing Champions, spokesperson for the NPO, Samantha Toweel-Moore remarked, “The children were absolutely thrilled, especially the Matrics! They were especially excited that the packs were their very own, brand new stationery. It really made a big impact in motivating them to work harder and look forward to tackling the challenges of the new school year. A huge thank you to the Cresta community for making the kids feel so supported and loved.” In addition to making the Back To School preparations hassle-free, Cresta welcomes PNA as one of their newest tenants. PNA offers an array of school supplies at the best prices, and is sure to meet shoppers’ unique needs throughout the year.
Cresta Shopping Centre and General Manager, Virginia Bester would like to thank their shoppers and the broader community for supporting their initiatives to uplift and strengthen each other. The spirit of Ubuntu is truly the driving force behind Cresta’s continuous endeavours to equip, uplift and invest in its community, while providing customers with exceptional service, now and into the future.
