Suspect arrested after Cosmo house robbery and assault

COSMO CITY – An alleged house robber was arrested on 18 April.

An alleged house robber was arrested after assaulting his victim during a Cosmo City house robbery on 18 April.

Honeydew police spokesperson Captain Balan Muthan said that during the late evening when the family was making dinner, an unknown male entered the property and asked for the person who lives in a room behind near the victim.
“After leaving, he shortly returned and asked for the same person again. After they gave him the same answer, the suspect pulled out a firearm and demanded the victim’s electronic goods and other valuables. The complainant got up and followed the robber. He caught him at the entrance of their premises,” said Muthan.

The victim managed to grab the firearm from the suspect’s waist and told him to give the cell phone back. The suspect tried to fight and the complainant hit him on his forehead.
Family members and community members came to assist and the police were called. Responding officers arrived and arrested the suspect.

“As he was bleeding, the suspect was taken to Helen Joseph Hospital under guard for medical treatment,” said Muthan.
He added that one of the biggest issues when dealing with in house robberies in the Cosmo City and Zandspruit areas are the ‘backrooms’.

“This is where an individual gets an RDP house and builds multiple rooms at the back of the property for others to rent out privately. This makes things more efficient for criminals. When one property is robbed, it results in multiple house robbery cases at one time because of this. This is something that does not do well on our statistics.”
