LINDEN – Use these safety tips to avoid falling victim to incidents of street crime.


Linden police spokesperson Constable Takalani Matumba has issued safety tips to help residents to avoid falling victim to incidents of street crime.

“It is unfortunate that the issue of street crime continues to be a problem, but we as the police are here to ensure that people are safe. “Please report crime when it happens and work together with us. Stay vigilant and do not behave recklessly,” she said.

Matumba issued the following safety tips to the community to help avoid falling victim to street crime:

  • Always be aware of your surroundings and try to stay in a group
  • Never overload yourself with numerous parcels, it easily makes you an easy target
  • When at a café or restaurant, make sure that your goods and electronic items are not on the table to avoid them getting snatched
  • Do not carry a large amount of cash on you. Rather use a card to swipe when doing your shopping
  • Never allow anyone to assist you drawing money from an ATM. Rather, if you require assistance, ask a bank worker to help you and do it inside the bank
  • Make sure that your wallet, cell phone, and other valuables are out of sight
  • Familiarise yourself with the area that you are going to, know the where your destination is and take note of closing times
  • Try to inform others of where you are going and the expected time you will be coming back.
