#MightyMack army in action at Ferndale’s Crossfit Cyprium
FERNDALE – Another #MightyMack will be hosted in July for blood and bone marrow donations.
#MightyMack army breaks a sweat and donates blood to raise awareness.
The Randburg Sports Complex and Crossfit Cyprium Gym in Ferndale opened their doors and fields to those looking to support the Mighty Mack Army. On the morning of 12 June members of the #MightyMack army came out in their numbers to support both the early morning walk, intense gym session and blood donation drive. Matthew Levine of Crossfit Cyprium Gym was thrilled at the number of people and energy displayed by those participating in the activities.

Levine said, “In this gym everyone supports each other and now we are supporting each other to support a really great cause. It makes everyone more excited, happy and energised to know that they are spreading all this love and happiness around to help five-month-old Mackenzie Friedman.”

Mackenzie Friedman was born on 5 January this year and appeared to be doing well in her early months. On Mother’s Day, she was taken to hospital with a high temperature and tests revealed that she has acute myeloid leukaemia – a cancer affecting her bone marrow and blood. Mackenzie’s mother and Sandton-resident Megan Harrington-Johnson was told that her daughter had between six and eight weeks to find a bone marrow match to save her life.
Crossfit Cyprium opened up their morning workouts to the public which also included free massages and assessments for those in need. In return, these fit, active and willing and able #MightyMack army allies would donate blood to the South African National Blood Service. Levine said, “We wanted to raise awareness for the Mighty Mack Foundation and at the same time help the blood service, and we thought that the best way to get people was to give them a free workout.”

With the goal set at collecting around 30 units of blood and more than 50 people present at the gym sessions, the team was sure that they had raised significant awareness for little Mackenzie and made a difference to the blood stocks.
Prior to this, the Randburg Sports Complex, thanks to DKMS Africa, formerly known as The Sunflower Fund, hosted walks of 5km, 10km, 15km and 21km as part of the efforts to raise funds for the cause.

Fortunately, the Crossfit Cyprium branch of the #MightyMack army is planning on hosting another gym, blood donation and bone marrow donation in July. Details of this will be shared closer to the time but the public are encouraged to supporting Mackenzie.
