Covid-19: Gauteng reaches peak of third wave
A major cause of concern for scientists is the recent protest action experienced in some parts of the province, which could cause the current downward trajectory in cases to reverse, and cause the province to take longer to flatten the curve.

The Gauteng Provincial Government has confirmed that the province has reached the peak of the third wave of Covid-19 infections, with the total number of cases remaining high, and the healthcare system remaining strained.
In a statement on July 16, the Provincial Government confirmed that an increase in hospital admissions has placed a heavy strain on the healthcare system.
As of July 15, hospital admissions were at a total of 9 063, with 3 429 being in the public healthcare system and 5 634 in the private sector.

The total number of cases in Gauteng is currently at 799 454, representing 35% of national cases. Within Gauteng, the highest number of cases can be found withing the City of Johannesburg (316 803), followed by Tshwane (219 981) and Ekurhuleni (160 699).


Gauteng has administered a total of 1 155 469 vaccines at this point. The provincial government is encouraging everyone who is currently eligible for a vaccination to do so. Currently all public vaccination sites across the province are accepting walk ins, and anyone over the age of 35 can register to receive a vaccine.
