Meet Landy Yeatman, Randburg Suns’ Hero of the Month

BROMHOF – She believes, among many beliefs, in sowing kindness everywhere you go and in the empowerment of women.

You did it community! The Randburg Sun received numerous nominations for Landy Yeatman to be Randburg Sun’s Hero of the Month, and it’s no surprise why you would want this courageous woman as your hero.

Though she was overwhelmed at the title, it was one she accepted with both humility and honour. A title she will undoubtedly accept with pride all while personally recognising this win couldn’t have been without the efforts of her amazing community too.

Yeatman has spent all her life in Randburg and currently calls Bromhof home, “Randburg runs deep in my veins,” she said, adding she lives there with her partner and two daughters.

It is close to three years ago now that she was diagnosed with Stage 3B Her2 breast cancer, and it was through this diagnosis that her initiative, People4Purpose was born. She confidently spoke of how come September, she will celebrate her second year of remission. People4Purpose is a non-profit organisation that focuses on assisting less-fortunate families with basic necessities in times of need.

“I received so much assistance, love and support during my cancer journey that I felt I had to start paying it forward and helping others who also needed a hand, no matter what the need,” she expressed

Last year, when Level 5 lockdown kicked in, so too did the real need of vulnerable families became evident. To seek assistance in helping these families, she quite often enlists the help of community members found on I Love Randburg Facebook page. “The spirit of Ubuntu really makes me happy and it’s amazing to see how the community step up for each other and rally forth when there is a genuine need.”

Though many can attest to Yeatman’s fighting spirit, there are aspects that still leave her generally feeling sad and that is the unkindness that she says seems to be around us. Her biggest principle is ‘always be kind’, “It costs absolutely nothing, and everyone can practise a little kindness.”

The empowerment of women is another aspect that is of great importance to her. She has seen how the pandemic has left many women-headed households unemployed, “I try to empower them through skills to get back on their feet, become independent and again be able to feed their families.”

A legacy Yeatman hopes to leave, especially with her daughters, is to #AlwaysBeKind.
