Macrame business keeps growing
HONEYDEW – From lack of employment security to securing employment for others.
The founder of Macrame & Co, Kim van den Ende is proud of how she’s been able to build a business, support herself and teach the world the beautiful art of macrame.
With the uncertainty of employment and income staring her in the face, she decided to start her own macrame (the making of decorative art by knotting strings into patterns) business that now sells amazing wall and plant hangers, hanging chairs, bedside tables and other items that are all handmade.

At first, the business was a means to make extra money but the consequences of Covid-19 would push her to focus all her energies on the new venture. She explained, “I lost my events management job at the beginning of the lockdown but at the same time I had people sending me photos of macrame items asking if I could make them. I would say yes and it continued to happen. The business was growing and I decided to give it my all.”
Not only has Van den Ende been able to support herself and reinvest into the business for it to thrive, but she has also been able to provide employment and income security for others after employing people to work for her. “It feels empowering because many are afraid to start a business in the fears of what they could lose. Yes, I was scared, like many, but I committed myself to make it work and now I can support myself and help others support themselves and their families.”
Based at Salvage Venue, they work on various items which Van den Ende described as unique, detailed, creative and a must-have. She also hosts workshops where she shares her macrame skills with those interested in therapeutic art.
