Police have confirmed a case of murder and business robbery has been opened after the owner of a tavern was gunned down in Cosmo City on the night of September 28.
Tributes for Stephen Nkuna poured in on the Cosmo City Rocks Facebook page the next day, with many sympathising on the loss, lamenting the state of crime in South Africa and discussing how they heard the gunshots.
Nkuna apparently owned a tavern and accommodation businesses in Alexandra township.
“The complainant was on duty in the shop busy selling and preparing food when two suspects entered pretending to be customers,” explained Constable Takalani Sibiya, who is spokesperson for Linden Police but filled in for the spokesperson for Honeydew Police Station, where the case was opened.
“The suspects produced firearms and demanded cash. The suspects then took an unknown amount of cash, [a] laptop and [a] cellphone from the complainant. The owner of the house, Mr Stephen Nkuna, entered the business and confronted the suspects. The suspects fired two shots at him and shot him, and he passed away on the scene. Members from SAPS responded and recovered the laptop and cash which the suspects dropped while fleeing from the scene.”
Sibiya said no suspects have been arrested yet but an investigation is under way.
She said police are pleading with anyone who has any information about the matter to contact the police.
