Pollution and lack of maintenance in parks escalates
RANDBURG – Pampoen Spruit and Klein Jukskei River are becoming a dumping ground, says resident.
A resident is fed up with the growing pollution and lack of maintenance in a number of Randburg parks and the municipality’s perceived lack of action.

Wendy Thomé also pointed out enormous trees that have fallen down in the greenbelt, and fences that have been broken, seemingly on purpose, and complains that City Parks has not been fulfilling its mandate, and not even responding to her emails alerting them about these issues.

“Reclaimers have nowhere to go, so they sort their recyclables in parks all over the place and there is so much pollution in our rivers because of it,” she said.
“Fences around parks are broken down so they can gain access, but criminals can use these to easily navigate our suburbs and evade police. Residents living next to parks have to build high walls and install electric fences. I have phoned and emailed the City many times in the past three weeks and nothing has been done.”

Evidence of reclaimers burning and sorting their rubbish is left in mounds along Pampoen Spruit and the Klein Jukskei River, all throughout Sonneglans, Boskruin, Sharonlea, Strijdom Park, Olivedale, Kelly Ridge, Bromhof and in other suburbs as far as Noordhang.

“I used to see dassies and other wildlife in the greenbelt but their habitats have been taken over by the reclaimers.”

Questions have been sent to City Parks spokesperson, Jenny Moodley and Ward 101 councillor Dalu Cele and the Randburg Sun will publish their comments when they are made.
Editor’s note: It has come to our attention that emails sent to City Parks spokesperson, Jenny Moodley, were not received by her. She has confirmed that comment will be provided as soon as possible.
