Service delivery and communication the focus in Ward 99

LINDEN – Keeping Emma Park clean and recyclers out of the neighbouring heritage site, is another matter in Ward 99.

Burst water pipes, electricity outages that last days, and lack of communication from municipal utilities are some of the issues Ward 99 councillor Nicole van Dyk is trying to resolve.

Talking to Randburg Sun about these matters, Van Dyk also outlined what residents could do to improve their suburbs.

“Often people will log a fault or send an email to a municipal entity like Joburg Water, City Power and Joburg Roads Agency, and they are told the matter will be addressed,” Van Dyk said.

“But there is no communication about when and how it will be done ad there are no updates as it happens. People end up going to their ward councillors to find this information. Meanwhile, there are people employed by the City for communication who I believe should be doing this.”

Burst water pipes were so numerous in Joburg, Van Dyk said she understood why people no longer notified Joburg Water about them.

“City Power doesn’t tell people when they can expect their electricity to be restored. When they tell me and I pass it on to residents, I tell residents to expect it a bit later as that is usually the case.”

Van Dyk and other ward councillors aim to take this matter forward to the City, and they hope to see more detailed public communication going forward.

Keeping Emma Park clean and recyclers out of the neighbouring heritage site is another matter.

Residents and the Metro police have made progress on this issue but it was an ongoing struggle.

Van Dyk said she worked closely with her residents’ associations, and encouraged residents to join their suburb’s associations, or if they didn’t have one they should form one.
