How to help a loved one suffering with addiction

BOSKRUIN – An addict will only change their ways if they realise they are at a crisis point.

It can be difficult knowing how to handle the situation when a loved one is suffering with addiction.

Crossroads Recovery Centre in Boskruin has experience in these matters, and addictions counsellor Brett Fortune, had some advice.

“When dealing with someone struggling with addiction, you are dealing with someone who can not see the reality of their situation,” he said.

“Family members and loved ones usually notice that there is a problem long before the addict. It is important that you seek out professional help. Often having them speak to someone who has experience in the matter will be more helpful than addressing it on your own.”

The addict will make promises but nine times out of 10 they will not be able to honour these, Fortune said.

In fact, you will need to help trigger a crisis point to help the addict see the error of their ways and take the first step toward recovery.

“Addiction is destructive and an individual will only take action as a result of a crisis. The challenge is how do you bring forward the crisis point. Family interventions, drug screening and seeking professional help can trigger the required crisis.”
