Woman is conned out of R285 000 by bogus spiritual healer

LINDEN – The complainant opened the bag to find her cash missing and pieces of white paper instead.

Police have warned residents about bogus spiritual healers in the area.

Spokesperson for Linden Police Station Sergeant Takalani Sibiya said police received a complaint about a certain woman recently.

“The woman told the complainant about what she is going through in her life and she also told her that she is a spiritual healer and she can help her,” Sibiya said, adding that the woman asked the complainant to visit her in Benyon Road, Pine Park.

“[The complainant] went to consult and was charged R550 and was given another date to come again. Complainant went to consult again and was told everything that she was going through and was told to resign from her work and concentrate on her other business.”

After the woman resigned, the spiritual healer told her to withdraw all her money and bring that to the healer for her to pray for a good start to the business.

“On the 9th of February, she went to see the spiritual healer with the amount of R285 000. She was instructed to put her money inside the bag and also buy white cloth to [wrap around the bag of money.”

The woman was told not to unwrap the cloth or open the bag for three days, while the spiritual healer prayed for it.

However, when the woman went home she had a bad feeling about the incident and opened the bag.

Inside, she found pieces of white paper instead of money.

The woman returned the spiritual healer was nowhere to be found.

“[We] would like to warn the community about this kind of fraud. It is happening a lot around the area and people are losing a lot of money through this kind of scam,” Sibiya concluded.
