Police tackle gangsterism in Cosmo City schools

COSMO CITY — SAPS together with the Cosmo City community plan to address the issue of gangsterism within the community and in schools.

The plight of gangsterism in Cosmo City schools apparently caused by non-school goers and illegal alcohol trading was discussed at a meeting by police and other stakeholders.
The police held the meeting at Cosmo City Police Station on March 15 with the aim of solving the problem in the area.

Among the issues discussed was a way forward on how best they could avert gangsterism at schools

Colonel Mxolisi Nama of the Provincial Head of Gauteng Organised Crime Investigations and other stakeholders identified some of the causes of gangsterism they had to deal with in schools.

One of the issues identified was that learners wanted to be transferred to other schools due to the intense gangsterism found in their schools.

The principal of Sgodiphola Secondary School in Cosmo City Reginah Mpete said, “In my school last year, I had an incident whereby one of our learners who was in matric stabbed a former learner to death, as a result, my learners are scared to be the next victims and want to flee from the school.”

Deputy principal of Blue Eagle High School Edward Maguwelele pleaded with law enforcement officials to arrest learners who were found in possession of illegal drugs and weapons.

“We as the school say if a learner is found with drugs or illegal weapons, we would like the police to take legal action against that learner because we do not want our learners to be scared of coming to school, as the school should be a safe place for learners,” said Maguwelele.

Karabo Afrika of a youth group in the community said the issue of illegal liquor owners selling alcohol to learners should be addressed.

He said people who sold drugs to learners should be raided by the police with the assistance of the Community Police Forum and youth leagues.

The Department of Education representative Makhosonke Ngomane suggested that all the stakeholders should be invited to their next meeting expected to take place in the coming week.
