WATCH: This street light may have shocked you
FERNDALE – Vandalism of street light leaves it live and two local dogs are shocked when they touched it.
A street light that was vandalised and live, caused concern in Ferndale and ended up shocking two local dogs before being attended to by City Power.
It is unknown if any people were harmed before the light on the corner of George Street and Oak Avenue was repaired.
“[This] is a recurring problem,” explained City Power spokesperson, Isaac Mangena.
“We have a challenge of vandalism of our streetlights whereby the covers are removed and stolen, leaving the live wires inside exposed. There [are] several of those streetlights that we were aware of and we have fixed.”

Mangena encouraged residents to report any suspicious activity around street lights or any electricity infrastructure.
Pierre van Wyk from the Ferndale Ridge Residents Group said the live street light posed a danger to passersby for about a week
Furthermore, Karin Kruger’s two dogs were shocked when they accidentally touched the street light.
“The dogs are fine now, though they are still a bit skeptical of that corner,” Kruger said.
The fault residents logged with City Power was apparently closed before it was attended to, and Van Wyk had to log another fault.
He used a multimeter to safely determine that there was still voltage running through the pole, before logging the fault again.
Mangena also thanked residents for bringing these matters to City Power’s attention.
