New homeowners association to tackle hijacked properties

Residents have formed a homeowners association to investigate, report and deal with criminal elements in their area, especially those that relate to illegal immigrants and hijacked properties.

Residents have formed a homeowners association to investigate, report and deal with criminal elements in their area, especially those that relate to illegal immigrants and hijacked properties.

The newly-formed South African Community Movement is based in Ferndale with currently around 50 members.

“But unlike Operation Dudula that has made so many headlines recently, this group of residents promises to be fair and ‘friendly’ in its approach to these matters. We won’t be harassing people,” explained member Thando Gawe, who together with founder Christina Mokgosi and members Lebo Sekgobela and Zuzeka Mapeyi, met Randburg Sun to make the community aware of the association.

“Where there are hijacked properties we get the police involved and will present those living there a letter to ask them to leave. If they do not, we will see about what we can do. This will all be done on a professional level.”

Residents could be rest assured there would be no violence from this movement’s members, the group said.

Mokgosi added the organisation would also work with the department of health and home affairs.

“We want to make this a national movement as it is a problem all over the country,” she said.

“Even here in Ferndale, we are aware of properties that have been taken over by criminals, many of them [allegedly] illegal immigrants who have used them as a base of operations.”

Mokgosi was the ANC candidate for ward councillor in Ward 102 at the last local government elections but stressed that this movement was not political.
