Substations to look better, be safer

ROBINDALE – Residents associations now have more freedom to maintain their substations.

One of the projects the Robins Residents and Ratepayers Association (RRRA) is looking to implement in the coming weeks, is a clean-up and securing of its substations.

Association chairperson Irvin Sammons said there are three substations supplying residents in Robindale.

One is in great nick thanks to the efforts of residents in trimming the lawn around it and securing its fence and lock.

But the substation on Cherry Drive is frequently broken into and vandalised.

When thieves steal cables, it can leave the area without electricity.

“We are working on taking ownership of, and maintaining, our substations,” Sammons said.

“Thanks to the work of residents, the substations are in a much better state than they would be in otherwise.”

Ward 99 councillor Nicole van Dyk claimed that the reality of the situation in Joburg is that residents who do not do take responsibility of their parks, streets, substations and other public facilities, will not see them maintained by the municipality.

She said a recent law also gave residents associations the authority to work closely with City Power in maintaining substations.
