Public toilets in Darrenwood to be demolished
Johannesburg Property Company confirmed once its report and paperwork is done, it will need only a week to demolish the facilities.
Public toilets that have been taken over by displaced people will soon be demolished.
The facilities on the corner of Republic Road and 1st Street – on the border of Darrenwood and Linden but technically more inside Darrenwood – have seen several displaced people move in and set mattresses down in the stalls.
No one uses the toilets anymore, but them.
“The City can confirm that the public toilets will be demolished after an extensive consultation with all the stakeholders [community, councillor, etc.] and after an approval is granted by Council,” read a statement by the spokespeople of the City, following the Randburg Sun asking for comment.
“Currently JPC [Johannesburg Property Company] is at the consultation stage and then a report will be drafted for consideration by Council. Once all is done, JPC confirmed that they will need a minimum of a week for demolition.”
Ward 99 councillor Nicole van Dyk confirmed she had been in discussion with the Johannesburg Property Company but they could not confirm for her when the demolishing would take place, only that it would happen by the end of the year.
“I suggested they sell the land so it can be used and they can make some money out of it,” she said.
“One of the local businesses has already told me they would buy it if they could.”
