A fire at a Ferndale substation leads to a widespread outage

Power was restored to most areas after six hours, others took longer.

A number of Randburg suburbs suffered a power outage when a substation in Ferndale caught fire.

Ward 134 councillor, Devon Steenkamp explained that Randpark Ridge, Bromhof, Sundowner, Boskruin and other smaller suburbs in block 14 were without electricity for roughly six hours one evening.

City Power is yet to confirm the extent of the damage at the substation.

It did however take several more hours the next day to restore power to some areas that were still off due to a fault at the Hawken Avenue switching station.

The substation on Marie Street caught fire to leave nearby suburbs without electricity for over six hours.

“It a City Power station on Marie Street, but the fire caused a short on the network which caused the entire Eskom Randburg Substation to trip – a safety mechanism,” Steenkamp explained.

City Power spokesperson, Isaac Mangena was contacted, and questions were sent to him about whether the utility will investigate the cause of the fire, how extensive the damage is, and when parts will be replaced.

His comments will be published as soon as they are made.
