Windsor Community Support Service hosts a successful kids’ colour fun walk
Children gathered at the Knights Avenue park to learn about a clean and safe environment in Windsor
Windsor Community Support Service (WCSS) held a Windsor community kids’ colour fun walk at Knights Avenue park in Windsor West on December 3.
The event was aimed to educate children about keeping the Windsor neighbourhood clean and safe while having fun.
WCSS liaison manager Mathabo Bhekimbia-Tchoffo said, “The aim of today was to get the kids together and educate them while they are having fun. Educate them about the clean environment and safety. We want them to go home knowing how to report crime. If they see something they must know there is WCSS they can contact. Most of them do not know other stakeholders like JRA, Joburg Water and City Power.”
Children and parents were covered in colour powder enjoying themselves. The event was divided in to three activities for the children. A little walk for the 6–8 year olds, the tug of war for the 9–11 years and the mob dance at the end.
Bhekimbia-Tchoffo added that the turnout was not as big as expected. “We chose the wrong weekend with many people busy with shopping. Some parents are not comfortable leaving their children behind. However, with those who came out we were able to achieve what we aimed for. The event was a big success,” she told Randburg Sun.
WCSS chairperson Karen Olivier explained that the community contributes to what they do and they have employed 10 people from Windsor.
“We have 10 people working for us, they are all local people from Windsor working for Windsor. We want to boost the economy from here. When we do events we use local people. Even during the Covid-19 period we had masks made by people from around the area. Everything we do is from Windsor for Windsor. We want to make a different in the area.”
Olivier added that they want to bring value back and also make sure that residents value the area again.
