Matriculant with a 93% average asks schools to focus on the mental health of learners

Top learner could study or do anything she wants this year but she chooses to take a break.

St Stithians College runner-up to dux scholar in Matric 2022, Katherine Hollingworth comments:

I finished this year with eight distinctions and a 93.1% average.

I was a dux scholar in grades 8, 9, and 10 and runner-up in grades 11 and 12.

I have been told I can do or study just about anything this year, but I plan to take a break.

I want to look after myself for a while.

Mental health and depression are often overlooked at the school level and a lot of young people are struggling with this.

In private schools, there is more support but in most government schools people do not understand mental health issues.

It is often up to the learner to go forward and look for help as they have so much anxiety and struggles at school.

There will be some teachers who will see it and make an effort to help.

But often these people slip through the cracks and have to struggle on their own.

Society, and schools especially, need to look at young people and see people, not just marks.
