Volunteers fill potholes across Honeydew, Randpark Ridge and Roodepoort on a Sunday morning
The Honeydew Community Policing Forum said this is an ongoing project, and community members are welcome to donate or get involved.
While some spend their Sunday mornings sleeping in, going to places of worship or visiting family, a certain group of volunteers works on potholes in the area.
The Honeydew Community Policing Forum (CPF) along with some police reservists, filled potholes along Beyers Naudé Drive, Christiaan de Wet Road, Blueberry Street and Constantia Drive on January 29.

The group lost count of the potholes they filled, but they used a total 3 500kg of tar and flattened the road afterwards with a plate compactor as well as light tools.
Some of the potholes measured 2m in diameter and were up to 30cm deep.
The morning’s work was just the start, explained the forum’s public relations officer, Michael Steyn, and acting chairperson Jon Rosenberg.

“We have to thank the companies, residents associations and individuals who donated money for this,” Steyn said.
“We are doing this as a community service and it is great that it is so visible. They can really see and benefit from the impact of this.”
He meant this as opposed to patrolling the area to prevent crime, which the community often does not see but still benefits from thanks to the forum.

Steyn added that many people hit potholes badly especially at night when it is dark.
“People stop to check or replace their tyres but they do not know who is out there hiding to rob you. When you hit a pothole and have to stop, I suggest you call your security company to assist or flag down one of the patrolling vehicles.”

Rosenberg said the project to fill potholes is ongoing, and the community can expect to see the volunteers on the road regularly.
Residents can check the group’s Facebook page to find out more about the project and how to contribute towards it.

Rosenberg and Steyn specifically thanked The Hire Shop SA for sponsoring the plate compactor, Panorama Residents Association for the fuel and additional hands, Welview Residents Association, Augemus Global, Blackheath Pool Services and Blueberry Hill Hotel for massive cash sponsorships which allowed them to buy the bulk of the tar needed.
Also, Robust Road Repair gave a discounted rate on the tar and Food Lover’s Market gave the group a place to offload and store all the tar. Eagle Canyon Golf Estate sponsored additional bags of tar and the pair also thanked all the residents who also donated towards this project.
