Randburg SPCA hosts wellness day for neighbourhood pets

The Randburg SPCA is dedicated to ensuring the welfare of all animals.

The heatwave did not deter pet owners ensuring their animals are well looked after thanks to the Randburg SPCA.

SB Security provides drinks for free to the community.

Making sure your animals are vaccinated is imperative as this helps to prevent deadly diseases such as rabies. With the recent outbreak of biliary, (a disease from tick bites which destroys red blood cells in animals), a flea-and-tick dip (where dogs take a dip in a chemical bath to kill any ticks or fleas), is a must.

The Community Group of Firefighter Association watches over the visitors on the day.

The SPCA team had a 5-in-1 vaccine (including a dewormer) at R200 per animal, an Identipet microchip for R150, a flea-and-tick dip at R20, as well as nail cutting from Superpets Spa for R60. The society also offered bookings for sterilisation.

Inspectorate controller Aimee Baxter said, ā€œIt has been such a successful day; we did not expect such a turnout but it shows how great the need is.ā€

Bowring Properties made sure everyoneā€™s tummies were full by selling yummy boerewors rolls while SB Security kept everyone hydrated. Community Group Fire Association (CGFA) and Beagle Watch kept a close eye on the security of the visitors too.

The day was about more than just vaccinations ā€“ it was pet-care education. Owners had many questions for the SPCA staff, such as medication to treat certain ailments and grooming.

SPCA Randburgā€™s general manager, Kaylie Henderson said, ā€œWe are delighted with the positive response from this initiative. We are hoping to run a wellness day four times a year. Today we vaccinated 106 pets and microchipped 29.ā€

The society thanked all the relevant role players for making the day such a victory for animal wellness.
