Shoppers will flock to shopping centres and malls all over the city during the holidays.
With more people out shopping and spending money, criminals are also looking for targets to rob and steal from.
Douglasdale Police Station Commander Brigadier Veeshani Arikum provided six reasons criminals find easy targets at the mall:
- People are not aware of their surroundings because there is so much going on and so many people around them and you cannot identify who is a criminal.
- When shopping people have open or unattended handbags because they are busy with their shopping and forget to remain aware of their surroundings.
- Carrying cell phones in the back pocket.
- Spending large amounts of cash can exposes you to criminals.
- Wearing expensive jewellery when going to malls.
- People who purchase expensive goods are usually followed home from malls.
