Friends of Delta work together to clean the park

Community members and Friends of Delta Park joined hands to clean up a significant area of the park that was unclean.

The residents offered their time to contribute to improving and securing the park for all visitors.

They were armed with plastic bags and sacks, and they cleaned and collected papers, bottles, clothing, and mattresses left by migrants who had been living in the park illegally.

Chris Becker who organised the clean-up explained that they have been doing the clean-ups for the last six months with the support of City Parks.

“We come on weekends and people take some time out and we spend a few hours going around, picking up litter. There is a lot that’s being left by people living here illegally and we move all out to keep the park clean, to look after an environment and habitat of wildlife and contribute to park safety.”

Becker added that residents taking the lead have been very important in this initiative and there has been good support from the city. “They are handling the things that we do not have authority to intervene on.”

The Friends of Delta Park have done 10 days of clean-ups in the last six months. Becker said that the number of people who are joining is growing and are showing their support.

He added that they looking to start formalising the initiatives more and have a proper structure.

Lucky Mpolobosho of Conservation Area, City Parks explained that they are assisting with taking the load to their dumping sites and they are helping with clearing the alien plants.

“We want to eradicate the alien invasive species here and we want to make this park a safe space for all the users that are coming at all times.”
