Sharonlea’s Michael Kernick takes home another victory

Despite a tough start, Sharonlea-based racer Michael Kernick came first in and won the Silvercup Race.

Round two of the Historic Single Seaters Association (HSSA) and Silvercup 2.0 at Zwartkops Raceway was a mixed bag of emotions for Michael Kernick from Sharonlea.

Starting on Friday during the open practice he felt a problem and it turned out a valve spring had broken on the 1965 Capital Formula Vee. They had a late night of fixing and rebuilding the motor and the car was back together and back at the track for Saturday’s racing.

For the historic single-seaters qualifying it was his dad Alan Kernick overall in the 1984 Tempest Formula Ford, Peter Kernick second in the historic Vee Class with the 1972 Witter Formula Vee. Michael was third in the historic Formula Vee Class on the Capital Vee.

Michael explained that in the HSSA race 1, he had a good start and got into the lead with his uncle in third place. Unfortunately, engine troubles returned and he had to stop. However, Alan managed to finish third overall and in the historic Formula Ford class, while Peter managed second place at the end.

“In Silvercup Race 1, I had a good start and got my head down and I had to work hard around corners to keep others behind. I managed to win and finish seventh overall and in Class C + as well as first none turbo car,” explained Michael.

He finished in seventh place overall in Silvercup Race 2 but was first place in the first in Class C+ for a day.

“Thank you to everyone who has been involved in making this race happen and thank you to everyone for the support.”
