RAC prepares runners for Comrades Marathon
Tom Cottrel, co-chairman of RAC, explained that the timing of the run gives the athletes enough time to recover before the Comrades Marathon.
The Rand Athletics Club (RAC) in Bordeaux provided a training opportunity for athletes with its annual 60km run held recently. This traditional race serves as a crucial milestone in the preparation of Comrades Marathon hopefuls.
According to Tom Cottrel, co-chairman of RAC, the 60km run is strategically positioned on the calendar to offer participants a full dress rehearsal before the iconic Comrades Marathon. “It is timed so that the post-recovery period gives a Comrades runner the best chance of arriving at the start well rested and full of confidence for what lies ahead.”
The event drew over 260 runners. One participant, Lerato Ntsele, shared her thoughts on the run. “I really enjoyed it and it was good training, got almost seven hours on my legs.”
Ntsele explained that the run was not difficult to complete. “The supporters were great and the road markings and RAC cones were easy to follow. I didn’t need to use the paper with route and directions. The team was friendly and helpful throughout the 60km.”

Cottrel highlighted the positive response from runners, emphasising the club’s dedication to ensuring runner safety and satisfaction. “Choosing such a long route in Johannesburg can present a challenge. Avoiding busy roads is important in the design, and runner safety is paramount. We are lucky in this city – there are many hills. We don’t avoid them; we look for them. This is a dress rehearsal for Comrades after all.”
Beyond preparing for the Comrades Marathon, RAC aims to create a supportive community for runners of all levels. “As a running club, we work hard to serve our members – those who have joined us with an interest in running.”
He explained that through this run, the RAC aims to provide help, knowledge and camaraderie to all who have an interest in pursuing a healthier lifestyle. “We don’t want to do this in isolation, and our training runs are open to all – members and non-members of RAC. It is a club with a rich heritage and a proud tradition.”
