17-year-old matriculant’s inspiring journey from football to rugby
After matriculating in 2024, Samuel Ogualu balances his passion for rugby with his dream of studying Hospitality or Tourism Management, to connect with people globally.

My name is Samuel Ogualu, and I am 17 years old. I matriculated in 2024, having started school earlier than most of my peers. I’m currently a rugby player at Diggers Rugby Club in Randburg, and I’ve been playing rugby since the beginning of 2024. The opportunities this sport has opened up for me have been truly unbelievable.

Rugby wasn’t always part of my plan. In fact, I never even thought about it growing up. Like most boys my age, I dreamed of becoming a professional footballer. But through the encouragement of my two friends, I decided to give rugby a chance and it’s amazing to see how far it has brought me.
At Diggers, rugby isn’t just a sport; it’s a family. Being part of this club has taught me that no matter what challenges life throws at you, through God’s grace and belief in yourself, you can accomplish anything.
Right now, my goals are clear. Firstly, after taking a gap year, I plan to study for a bachelor’s degree in Hospitality or Tourism Management. My interest in hospitality and tourism has grown over the past few years. When I first started studying tourism at school, I assumed we would simply learn about countries and flags. However, as I delved deeper into the subject, I realised how much it aligned with my passion for meeting new people and hearing their stories. I’m a friendly person who loves interacting with others, and the idea of working in a field where I can connect with people from different walks of life excites me.
Secondly, I’m determined to become a professional rugby player. With the support of my coaches, my faith in God, and my willingness to work hard, I know that nothing will stand in the way of these dreams.
To anyone out there considering taking a leap of faith, I say go for it! You never know where it could lead you.
For now, I’m focusing on making the most of this journey on the rugby field, in my studies, and in every opportunity that comes my way.
