Community Heroes do more than just clean the streets
Working their socks off cleaning the street and clearing blocked drains on President Fouche Road, the Community Heroes group does more than just clean streets. They bring together residents to make communities better.
The Community Heroes group, made up of residents from Bromhof, Boskruin, Northworld, and surrounds, gathered on President Fouche Road for a day of meaningful action.

The group of volunteers rolled up their sleeves and took on the challenge to tackle overgrown sidewalks, clear litter, and most importantly, unblock three major drains, stopping future flooding. The road recently suffered a severe flooding during the heavy rains, caused by blocked drains.

Nikki Belt, a member of the group, explained that the cleanup was nothing short of extraordinary. It is a true testament to the power of community when they come together for a common cause. “Watching everyone working side by side, transforming our shared spaces, reminded me of why we do this: To build something that lasts. This wasn’t just about cleaning up; it was about creating a sense of ownership and belonging that we can all carry with us. It’s proof that when we unite, we can make real change.”
She further stated that the amount of work done was incredible, and every bit of effort contributed to something bigger than any one person. “It’s moments like these that remind me of the strength and determination of our community. We’re not just making our spaces cleaner; we’re building a stronger, more connected neighbourhood. I am beyond proud of how much we achieved together, and I know this is only the beginning.”
Cleanups have become absolutely crucial to the wellbeing of the communities under the heroes’ group. They are about more than just keeping the streets clean. They send a clear message that residents care about where they live, that they are strengthening the bonds between residents, and they are showing that the residents are committed to making their communities a better place for everyone.

Belt explained that these events help them take pride in their surroundings, keep their neighbourhoods safe, and instill a deep sense of responsibility for the spaces they share. The impact of these cleanups goes far beyond just the physical transformation; they’re essential in creating a connected, resilient, and unified community.
“Cleanup efforts often lead to a sense of safety and pride, which can deter criminal activity. When people actively care for their surroundings, it sends a message that the area is being watched and looked after, and that people are invested in keeping it safe. While we can’t fully eliminate crime through cleanups alone, creating an environment of pride and accountability can make a significant difference in reducing unwanted activity.”
She added that this is their year to elevate heroes’ movement even further, and that, as a community, they are not just cleaning up, they’re creating a lasting impact. “The work is far from over, and we need more residents to step up. This is a call to every resident to be part of the change we’re creating. If you’ve been thinking about joining, now’s the time. We’ll be holding regular cleanups, but we need your energy, your hands, your heart. Together, we’ll create a ripple effect that goes beyond the streets we clean.”

They’re also launching a prize draw to raise funds to continue the work and are calling on local businesses and residents to support it. “Whether it’s buying a ticket, donating a prize, or simply telling your friends about it, your support is key to keeping this movement alive. Let’s make 2025 the year we truly transform our community – One cleanup, one action, one heart at a time.”
