Born on March 5 1925 in what was then South West Africa (now Namibia), Edith’s early years were shaped by both joy and hardship. She lost her father at just eight years old but her entrepreneurial mother ensured the family remained resilient. World War II led Edith and her family to South Africa, where she attended boarding school at Springs Convent.

Her working life began as a secretary but it was love that changed her course. In 1945, she married Philip Botes, a motor mechanic, and they built a life in Johannesburg, raising a daughter and a son. Their journey took them from Johannesburg to Durban, where Edith embraced various careers, from legal secretary to buyer at the Royal Hotel. After Philip’s passing in 1991, she returned to Johannesburg and later moved to Summerfield in 2015.

Even at 100, Edith’s zest for life shines. During her party, a creative twist helped her blow out the daunting 100 candles when a balloon was popped over them, extinguishing them all in an unexpected and joyful moment.

Surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, Edith remains a beloved presence at Summerfield. Heartfelt thanks were extended to Pastor John for his blessings, as well as to the caring nursing staff and management who have made her final years comfortable.
