Election posters still on display in Randpark Ridge

Economic Freedom Fighter election posters still on poles months after elections.

Election posters are still on display on Dale Lace Ave in Randpark Ridge, ten months after the polls, despite a by-law obliging parties to remove posters 14 days after the election.

Economic Freedom Fighter (EFF) posters are still on the streetlight poles. Residents Deon Prommel tried to contact Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD), as well as the ward councillor, for assistance, but was unsuccessful.

“The councillor suggested we contacted JMPD. It is impossible to get through to anyone who is willing to assist. I thought these posters had to be removed after the elections, otherwise the parties would be fined. Nothing has been done. They’re still on display.”

He added that he actually asked JMPD officers, while they were in the area, but they gave him excuses of not having a ladder, as the signs are high, and that they only remove them if they are obstructing road signboards.

EFF election posters remain on the poles.

JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla confirmed that upon the conclusion of elections, political parties are obligated to remove all campaign posters.

These posters were displayed under the provisions of Section 28 of the City of Johannesburg outdoor advertising by-laws (2009). It stipulates that political parties must remove all campaign posters within 14 days of the election’s conclusion. “If a party fails to remove its posters within this period, the council will issue a notice requiring removal within a specified timeframe. Failure to comply with the council’s notice will result in the council removing the posters, and charging the responsible party a fee of R500 per poster.”

The JMPD by-law unit is responsible for identifying and removing remaining posters, and issuing fines to non-compliant parties.

Fihla added that the unit has been notified to investigate and remove any remaining posters.

EFF was sent questions about the issue but hadn’t replied by the time of print.
