Nerina Street pipe burst leads to no water for parts of Randburg
A pipe burst and unattended reinstatements on Nerina Street, in Kensington B, are causing problems for residents, including water being cut off, so that JW can, hopefully, deal with it.
Johannesburg Water (JW) has confirmed that water has been isolated (closed) due to a pipe burst on Nerina Street, and residents in the area will experience poor pressure to no water.

Affected areas include Bordeaux, Ferndale, Blairgowrie, Moret, Kensington B, and parts of Bryanston. They promised that more updates will be provided to customers as they become available.

The Nerina Street pipe burst has been going for over three weeks, with the entity failing to patch the pipe that is spraying out clean, fresh water. The water has been causing further damage to the pavement. An excavation was made to expose the pipe, but now rubble has taken over one of the lanes, forcing motorists to use the other lane, which is causing traffic delays.

Ward 104 councillor Emi Koekemoer explained that she was alerted to the pipe burst, and quickly escalated the matter. Three days later, JW managed to procure an emergency clamp, but it didn’t hold. “Another clamp, costing residents hundreds of thousands of rands, was bought, but that clamp isn’t holding either. Now, there’s been water spewing out of the pipe for the last three and a half weeks.”

A few metres up from the pipe burst is another big reinstatement, which has been left unattended from over a year ago, blocking off a lane.

Koekemoer further explained that there are two schools around Nerina Street, The King’s School and Ferndale High School, so they have high amounts of traffic coming from this area in the morning, and the two issues are just making it worse. “The other hole was from a burst that took place over a year ago, because the infrastructure is that bad. It has been standing open since, and the excuses we get is that the storm water drain needs to be replaced. Of course, there’s been no effort to do that. It’s so bad, that there was a tree growing out of it. The business owner across from it actually went and had it removed.”

Questions were sent to JW about both issues, but they had not replied by the time of print. However, their responds will be published once made available.
