HP is the founder of Winklmayr, a company he started a few years back, which creates exquisite handbags and accessories for both men and women, each meticulously handcrafted by skilled artisans.

He explained that he was born into a leather dynasty and grew up in it. “Leathercraft is in my blood. It’s not just a business; it’s a lifelong dedication.”
HP specialises in exotic leathers, like ostrich and crocodile, for his products. He brings an unmatched level of expertise to every handbag and accessory produced, personally training each artisan and overseeing every creation, ensuring that each piece meets the highest standards of craftmanship and durability.
He explained that he went into retirement, but got bored, and decided to start again, with something new. “It’s been challenging but also rewarding. Everything takes time. Three years into the enterprise, we start seeing the light, but it’s good and fun. We like what we are doing. It’s beautiful when you get good remarks from customers and they appreciate your work. It’s a good journey.”

To back their superior craftmanship, every product comes with a lifetime warranty, a testament to the brand’s unwavering commitment to durability and excellence. Proudly South African yet globally competitive, Winklmayr seamlessly blends heritage and innovation.
“We take a lot of care making our products to a very high standard,” said HP. “You can see it when you look at them, you can feel it when you touch them. My designs are very unique. It’s not like another brand copied. We create our own bags and shapes.”

HP has employed nearly 20 people, who he also mentors and trains. He also supports non-profit organisations and various sewing initiatives, empowering artisans in underprivileged areas. “We are more than just a brand; we are a movement celebrating South African craftmanship on the global stage. Each of our creations tells a story – not just of luxury, but of heritage, sustainability, and the hands that bring them to life.”
Customers are welcomed at the Winklmayr showroom, with a curated selection also available at Bryllianta Diamonds and Tanzanite in Sandton. They can also order online.

Sharing his thoughts on the craftsmanship industry in this country, HP explained that there’s been a shift from working or making things with your hands, to pushing buttons. “The younger generation, I’m generalizing it, enjoys more pushing buttons than actually crafting with their hands. When you then find people who enjoy what they’re doing, and enjoy working with their hands, then the results are phenomenal.”
