Cosmo City non-motorised transport project reaches practical completion

The non-motorised transport project is all about improving the city's infrastructure and making sure to create an urban friendly environment.

The Johannesburg Transport Department and Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) have completed a significant non-motorised transport (NMT) project in Cosmo City’s Ward 100.
The project, which is aimed to improve pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure, enhance public transport facilities, and promote sustainable transportation, included storm water management, street lighting, mini-bus laybys, and bus stop shelters, and has resulted in the installation of three super stops on South Africa Drive.
According to the JDA, the NMT infrastructure is designed to reduce congestion, create safer urban environments, and enhance overall quality of life.

Kenneth Nxumalo, senior manager at the JDA, emphasised the project’s focus on pedestrian safety, universal access, and environmentally conscious infrastructure. “By prioritising these aspects, the project ensures that all residents can navigate the city with greater ease, dignity, and safety.

“As the infrastructure arm of the city, the JDA plays a vital role in the development of quality NMT infrastructure, which is critical in facilitating safe and accessible NMT use and unlocking NMT’s potential to become a feasible and sustainable transport mode in the city.”

The City of Johannesburg’s Transport Department will be responsible for ongoing maintenance, including cleaning, repairs, and future upgrades to the super stops.

Nxumalo added that the department is committed to expanding such initiatives city-wide, with the goal of making public and NMT the preferred mode of travel by 2040.

This project supports sustainable transport by integrating walking, cycling, and public transport options, promoting a more people-centred and environmentally friendly urban environment.
