Eskom in process of replacing burnt transformer in Cosmo City

Eskom is aware of the outage, and is in the process of installing a new transformer for Cosmo City residents, who have been without electricity for over a month.

Eskom has confirmed that it is aware of the blackout in Cosmo City Ext 5, and has been monitoring the situation closely.

Residents were in the dark after an Eskom transformer caught fire on July 31, causing a blackout in the area. Residents have been without electricity since.

Spokesperson Amanda Qithi explained that the transformer was damaged as a result of an internal short circuit. “There is currently a high demand for transformer replacements across Gauteng, which has led to delays in allocation and delivery. Our teams are, [on September 8], on site and are in the process of replacing the transformer.”

It has been over a month since the black out, and one of the residents, who wished to remain anonymous, explained that they struggled to get answers from the entity. “The last communication from Eskom was that the transformer had been collected by the technician from Germiston, and that the installation will happen in the last week of August.”

The homeowners went to Megawatt Park, in Sunninghill, to look for answers, but could not get straight feedback and were sent away. “We’ve lost food due to this, as the fridges are off. The security and safety of the residents is compromised, and it is difficult for the kids to study and do their homework.”

He added that they are paying customers, but still they are struggling to be assisted. “Not receiving the service delivery, as promised, is not good. Eskom is losing revenue on this, but still there is no urgency on the matter.”
