Water gushes for months in Olivedale as Johannesburg battles shortages
While Johannesburg faces crippling water outages, residents in Olivedale watch in frustration as clean water flows unchecked from a pipe burst ignored for months.
At a time when Johannesburg residents are urged daily to save water, a pipe burst in President Fouché Road, Olivedale, has been left to gush clean water for months.
Residents, joined by Ward 101 councillor Ralf Bittkau, this week say their repeated reports to Johannesburg Water have gone unanswered, despite reference numbers being issued. “It’s clean water, running down the street. More than ten households would use it in a month,” said Bittkau. “It’s an absolute disgrace.”

The frustration comes as many communities across the city face dry taps, linked to failing reservoirs and ageing infrastructure. “We are told to save water, while the city ignores major leaks. It shows a clear lack of urgency.”

The councillor also warned that the neglect is part of a broader trend, citing delays at the Brixton reservoir and tower project, infrastructure designed to support supply in areas like Randburg and beyond. Payments to contractors have stalled, leaving the R70m shortfall unresolved.
With the existing Hursthill reservoirs operating at a fraction of their capacity, Bittkau believes the situation could soon put up to a million residents at risk. “Every day we lose water to leaks and lose time to delays. It’s a snowball effect that threatens the city’s stability.”
Residents in Olivedale have urged Johannesburg Water to take action, saying the ongoing waste adds insult to injury for communities already struggling under frequent water shortages.
Johannesburg Water was contacted for comment, and their external communications officer Nolwazi Dhlamini noted that they are liaising with the relevant depot to get more information and will provide a response as soon as it is available, and their comment will be published once made available.
