One dead, one arrested in Cosmo shootout

The police investigations are continuing as the suspect arrested in Cosmo will appear in the Randburg Magistrates' Court.

A 36-year-old man will appear in the Randburg Magistrates’ Court soon, facing charges of attempted murder, kidnapping, and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Office of the District Commissioner for Johannesburg Major General Nonhlanhla Kubheka said that on December 1, the suspect and his accomplice allegedly confronted a 45-year-old man who was a customer at a supermarket in Honeydew.

“The suspects pushed the victim inside their vehicle and drove away. Upon noticing what was happening, the security guard closed the gate to block the suspects’ vehicle. One of the suspects jumped out of the vehicle to confront the guard to open the gate.”

He said that the victim managed to escape from the vehicle, and he was shot at, but fortunately, he was unharmed. The suspects fled the scene in their vehicle, and the police were alerted. “A chase ensued. The suspects drove to the Cosmo City area, where their vehicle collided with a delivery bakkie. They then abandoned their vehicle and fled in different directions,” Kubheka explained. He added that upon realising that they were cornered, the suspects started shooting at the police, who then returned fire. One suspect was fatally wounded, the other suspect was arrested, and a 9mm pistol and a revolver were recovered.

Police investigations are continuing, and Kubheka applauded the members for their swift reaction and dedication in ensuring that the community is and feels safe.
