Bryanfern Residents Association urges all Joburgers to get active in their residents associations

With their AGM upcoming, Bryanfern Residents Association acting chairperson John Endres urges all Joburgers to find their own residents associations, to join and to make a difference in their communities.

John Endres, acting chairperson of the Bryanfern Residents Association (BRA), encourages the community to find out who their local residents’ association is, and to lend them support. “Johannesburg residents don’t need to be told that our city is struggling. Roads are deteriorating, electricity and water outages have become common, and public spaces are often neglected. It is easy to feel frustrated – or to assume nothing can be done, but Johannesburg has never been a city that simply waits for problems to be fixed. Joburgers step in and make things happen. Across our suburbs, residents’ associations are a powerful example of that community spirit at work.”

Ward 104 councillor Emi Koekemoer emphasised how associations help make things possible. “They connect communities with their councillors and the municipality, helping to organise and channel concerns so problems can be addressed more effectively. They also play a practical role in improving neighbourhoods day-to-day.”

She added that much of this work happens quietly. “Volunteers organise clean-ups and grass cutting, link neighbours through community WhatsApp groups, support local safety initiatives, and engage regularly with city officials to push for service delivery. They also help residents respond collectively to developments, rate proposals, and other local issues that affect our suburbs.”

In many ways, residents’ associations help communities fill the gaps where the city is falling short. As this municipal term draws to a close, it is clear that neighbourhoods would face far greater challenges without their efforts. However, residents’ associations only work when residents get involved.
The BRA is inviting residents living within the precinct to join their annual general meeting (AMG) on February 21, or to visit bryanfern.co.za to become a supporter. The BRA serves the area between Oxford and Jacaranda roads, and between Vale and West roads in Bryanston and Ferndale.
