Ferndale companies help pets in disadvantaged communities
Ferndale companies Hades Thrift and Coffee Shop and Holiday Travel Group ensure pets in disadvantaged communities will receive much for Mandela Day.
Bags of dog and cat food, blankets and toys for pets will be going to disadvantaged communities across Joburg thanks to a Mandela Day initiative.
Hades Thrift and Coffee Shop collected these items from individuals as well as a large portion from the Holiday Travel Group – a company which, like Hades, is also based in Ferndale.

“Many people we will be taking these things to do not have money for proper dog and cat food and their pets just get scraps of bread and other things,” explained Gideon’s Animal Outreach director, Gideon Morar, who will distribute the items.
“We actually mainly do medical services, so de-worming, sterilising and vaccinations. Many people in townships do not mind their dogs having puppies because they sell them for R100 or R200. But the animal population can get out of control and they are often not well cared for. Sometimes we have to incentivise it by giving people dog food if they agree to let us sterilise their dogs.”

Holiday Travel Group general manager Deolinda da Silva said they chose to support this initiative because Hades was a store in the immediate neighbourhood, and they could see its owner Ardele Fernandes was passionate about giving back.
