Gauteng police release second quarter 2024 stats for crime in the areas

The Gauteng crime statistics from the second quarter of 2024 sees increases and decreases for the various categories across the various sectors, showing that the police are making ground in some sectors, but lagging behind in others.

On November 25, Gauteng published the crime statistics for the second quarter (from July to September 2024) of the 2024/2025 financial year.

The police stations around Randburg, Honeydew, and Cosmo City were mentioned in most categories, with stats showing increases and decreases compared to the second quarter of 2023.

In the 17 community-reported serious crimes categories, which includes: murder, rape, sexual assault, assault with grievous bodily harm, carjacking, etc, Honeydew was placed 11th in the top 30 police stations in the country, and fourth in the province. They had 1 704 cases reported, showing a decrease of 7 compared to 2023.

In sexual assault, Honeydew recorded 10 cases, which is five counts higher compared to last year. They are placed 10th in South Africa and second in the province.

In common robbery, Randburg was placed seventh in Gauteng, with 71 cases reported, compared to 72 last year, a 1.4% decrease.

In trio crimes, made up of carjacking, robbery at non-residential premises, and robbery at residential premises, Cosmo City saw 83 cases reported, which is an increase of 42 counts compared to 41 reported in 2023.

They also saw 18 counts higher in robbery at residential premises, placing 24th in South Africa and seventh in Gauteng. In robbery at non-residential premises, Cosmo City recorded 19 cases, compared to six in 2023.

Honeydew was third place in Gauteng with a 24,7% decrease in property-related crime, compared to 2023. Property-related crime refers to crimes during which tangible property of an individual or institution is taken by criminal elements without permission, and in the absence of the owner/custodian of such property. This type of crime includes burglary at both residential and non-residential premises, theft of motor vehicles and motorcycles, theft out of or from motor vehicles, and stock-theft.

In burglary at non-residential premises Randburg saw 48 cases, compared to 22 in 2023. They are placed fifth in Gauteng.

Despite the 11,5% decrease, Honeydew placed fourth nationally and third in Gauteng for theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle, with 123 reported cases, compared to 139 last year. While Cosmo City saw a major increase of 70,7% with 41 reported cases in 2023, to 70 in the second quarter of 2024.

In theft out of or from motor vehicles, Honeydew saw a decrease of 36,1%, placing eighth in the province. Honeydew recorded an increase of 2,7% in the other serious crimes category, which includes all theft not mentioned elsewhere, commercial crime, and shoplifting. They were placed third in the province, recording 323 cases. They also had an increase of 17,5% in commercial crime, with Douglasdale on 18%, and Randburg on 16,4%.
