Delivery bike driver dies in Randburg after pothole avoidance crash
When a Toyota Starlet braked to avoid a pothole, a delivery bike driver clipped it, swerving into oncoming traffic, and being hit by a Suzuki Swift. The delivery driver died on the scene.
A motorbike delivery driver died after a vehicle in front of him allegedly hit the brakes in a bid to avoid a huge pothole on Blandford Road in North Riding.
Ward 101 councillor Ralf Bittkau is pointing fingers at the city, and Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA), for negligence after the horrible accident on March 31.
Johannesburg Metro Police Department spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla confirmed that the incident involved three vehicles, a silver Toyota Starlet and a white Suzuki Swift, the drivers of which sustained no injuries, and the white Big Boy motorcycle. The deceased man was removed to the Roodepoort mortuary.

“The Toyota Starlet slowed down due to a large pothole in the roadway. The Big Boy motorcycle clipped the rear of the Toyota Starlet and subsequently collided with the Suzuki Swift, which was travelling south on Blandford Road,” said Fihla.
The ward councillor explained that JRA recently fixed the small potholes on Blandford Road, but left the big ones. “We have been on JRA for weeks to get to our area. In Ward 101, we have a lot of big potholes. It is time that this city gets their act together, and stops the carnage.”

He added that they cannot allow this to go on. “There are no more excuses. People are getting killed because of the negligent attitude of the city regarding the roads we are travelling on. Something must happen. We cannot afford to lose lives because of this type of thing.”
According to a community member, JRA was seen fixing the pothole on Blandford Road hours after the accident.
