Cosmo City unites for Ext 8 clean-up for Mandela Day

Mandela Day brought residents closer together, allowing them to bond while cleaning up their streets.

Residents of Cosmo City came together to celebrate Mandela Day as community members rallied together to clean up the streets, starting from the Multipurpose Centre and extending to Ext 8 at the Shell garage.

The event included both young and old community members, and began with organisers encouraging participants to get into the Madiba spirit by singing songs.

Khethiwe Mahlalela, a 20-year-old from Ext 8, shared her motivation for joining the clean-up. “I grew up with my grandmother, who would always tell me stories about Nelson Mandela’s fight for our country. That inspired me to be a better person and make a positive impact in my community.

“I’m glad to be part of this clean-up because I feel like I’m contributing to a bigger change. Cosmo City often struggles with litter and sewage issues, making it look dirty. If our community could understand the importance of not littering, I believe we would see significant improvement.”

Residents were happy to have been a part of the 67-minute Mandela Day initiative. They expressed their thoughts, saying that they wished more community members had adhered to the invitation sent out by the councillor to clean up their streets. Then they would have been able to divide themselves equally and extend to other sections of Cosmo City.

Ward councilor Lyborn Ndou said: “I’m grateful to the residents who were able to honour the invitation, and helped us to clean up some parts of our community. I wish more people could have participated. Perhaps then we could have reached other extensions as well, but we are happy that we were able to reach our target for the day, and hope that residents will stop littering and use the bins that are provided.”
