Golden Harvest Retirement Village faces water crisis

Having little to no water has been a daily nightmare for the residents of Village Golden Harvest number 1 as JW keeps giving them false hope about fixing the issue.

Residents of Village Golden Harvest No. 1, a retirement village in Randburg, are grappling with a severe water crisis due to persistently low water pressure from Johannesburg Water (JW).

After years of receiving a consistent daily water pressure of 5 bars, the village has recently experienced a drastic drop to below 2 bars. This sudden change has caused distress among residents, many of whom are elderly pensioners who diligently pay their municipal dues.

Adding to their frustration is the lack of communication and transparency from JW. Residents claim they were never informed about the issue. The village comprises approximately 100 housing units, home to senior citizens—some of whom are over 100 years old. Those living on the upper side of the village are the most affected, receiving little to no water.

Ronnie Lotterring, the village’s maintenance manager, said:

“I first reported this issue on the 15th of July because that’s when we started receiving low water pressure. We found out that it was not only us but also others living on the same street. However, the problem was never fixed. Despite calling them many times, they kept saying they would send someone to check the meter, but no one has come to this day.”

To resolve the issue, the village manager contacted ward councillor Ralf Bittkau, who promised to escalate the matter to the relevant authorities. Despite his follow-ups with JW, the problem remains unresolved.
Bittkau expressed his frustration:

“This is ridiculous. When the retirement home contacted me, I made sure to do a follow-up with JW, and they assured me they would investigate the problem. It’s honestly frustrating because that place has old people, and now they’re struggling to get water, which is a necessity. No one should be struggling to get water, especially when they’re paying for it.”

Johannesburg Water has been contacted for comment. Further details will be shared once a response is received.
