MEC slams water waste and poor roads

MEC Vuyiswa Ramokgopa says Johannesburg Water and Johannesburg Roads Agency must account for neglect in Randburg, where roads are crumbling and water leaks remain unfixed.

Vuyiswa Ramokgopa, national chairperson of RISE Mzansi and MEC for Agriculture in Gauteng, visited the corner of Pretoria Avenue and Harley Street in Ferndale, where clean water continues to flow out into the street, going all the way down to Oak Avenue, where the water has caused multiple potholes.

Ramokgopa, who is also a member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature, stated that the visit was part of her constituency work, after being alerted to problems by residents and business owners. “There’s a giant hole with water gushing out of it. Potholes everywhere. The roads are poorly maintained. The area is falling apart.”

She said, many community members have voiced frustration at the state of the area. Concerns include constant water leaks, which have gone unfixed for two years, dangerous potholes, a lack of road repairs, and signs of urban decay. “These are law-abiding citizens. They pay rates. They run businesses. They just want the city to function.”

Ramokgopa criticised entities like Johannesburg Water (JW) and Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) for failing to act. “JW must explain why litres of fresh water are being wasted every day. JRA must explain why this road looks like a war zone.”

She promised to escalate the issues and push for answers. “We want these departments to account. We want the work done. We want the repairs finalised.”
