Boundary Road leak finally fixed after weeks of delays

The Boundary Road leak in Cosmo City, first reported in July, has finally been repaired by Johannesburg Water after delays caused by sourcing specialised parts.

Residents around Tripoli and Mauritania streets in Cosmo City can breathe a sigh of relief after Johannesburg Water completed repairs on a long-running leak on Boundary Road.

The leak, linked to a faulty Pressure Reducing Valve (PRV), had been causing frustration for weeks. It was first reported on July 9, but delays in sourcing specialised parts stalled repairs. In the meantime, water tankers were deployed to support affected households.

Johannesburg Water spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala confirmed that the leak has now been resolved.

“Joburg Water has been in the process of sourcing the specialised material required for the PRV repairs. This caused a delay in addressing the leak,” she said.

Although initial repairs were attempted earlier, the valve needed a full replacement to ensure a permanent solution. Shabalala explained that while the leak had seemed resolved at one stage, it reoccurred, forcing the utility to intervene again.

She added that the completed PRV work will now prevent water from spilling into private properties. Residents whose homes were damaged can lodge claims, which will be investigated before any compensation is processed.

Shabalala stressed that Johannesburg Water uses a reference number system to track all reported faults and ensure accountability.

Addressing wider concerns, she said the utility continues to monitor recurring leaks in Ward 114. “Where a pattern of repeated leaks is confirmed, we engage our Infrastructure Planning team to assess whether upgrades or more extensive interventions are required in the ward,” she said.

With the Boundary Road leak fixed, residents hope the relief will last and that Cosmo City’s water challenges will see more lasting solutions in the future.
