High Five Show teaches young learners to be kind, brave and resilient

Learners at Nova Pioneer were treated to an uplifting High Five Show, teaching them important life skills through fun, interactive lessons.

Learners at Nova Pioneer Primary School recently participated in the High Five Show, a fun and interactive programme designed to teach children about kindness, bravery, safety, resilience, and the importance of being themselves.

The show, aimed at children aged 7 to 10, uses lively presentations and engaging activities to get learners involved.

With colourful demonstrations and open discussions, the presenters encourage learners to take part and reflect on how they can apply these lessons in their daily lives.

Grade 3 learner Wadiwa Mbendana explained what she learned on the day: “We were learning about being kind, being brave, being safe and being bouncy, and being you.”

Another Grade 3 learner, Katlego Sebatana, said she enjoyed being part of the event.

“What we learned at the High Five Show is to be kind, to be safe, to be bouncy and to be you,” she shared.

Teacher Kaylean de Kock, who teaches Grade 1s at Nova Pioneer, believes the programme makes a lasting impression.

“The High Five Show is encouraging students to be kind, to be safe, to be brave, and just reminding them to be themselves. It’s very interactive and I think it has a very good positive impact,” she said.

For the presenters, the goal is to make mental health lessons accessible and enjoyable. MC and presenter Liane Nieuwenhuys explained, “It’s a mental health show where we teach kids from the ages of 7 to 10 to be kind, be safe, be bouncy, be brave and be themselves.

To be bouncy means to be resilient. We use that word to help them understand the idea of bouncing back.”

Nieuwenhuys added that the response from the children was heart-warming: “The kids were as interactive as they could be, and it was so fun to see all of their reactions and responses.”
