Ward 102 residents urged to engage on rising crime and by-law concerns

Ward 102 residents are urged to attend a community engagement meeting to discuss safety, illegal trading, health services, housing developments, and urban renewal plans.

Residents of Ward 102 are being called to attend a community engagement meeting on October 19, from 14:00 to 17:00 at the Ferndale Recreation Centre, 38 Harley Street.

The meeting hosted by the Randburg Community Forum (RCF) will focus on key issues affecting the ward, including crime, by-law enforcement, cleanliness, and urban development.

Mthunzi Luthuli, who was elected to the Ward 102 committee in May 2025 and is responsible for safety and policing, said one of the top priorities will be to have an open discussion about crime levels in the area and what law enforcement is doing to address them.

“We want to look at crime stats. Is crime in Randburg increasing or decreasing? And if it’s increasing, what is SAPS and JMPD’s strategy to reduce crime levels?” Luthuli explained. “Certainly, for us as residents on the ground, we feel that crime levels are going up.”

He added that part of the discussion will also clarify the different responsibilities of the SAPS and the JMPD, to help residents understand how both agencies operate and where they can be held accountable.

The meeting will feature presentations from Randburg SAPS station commander Brigadier Michelle Jones, who will share the latest crime statistics and policing plans, and JMPD deputy director Mike Smith, who will outline the city’s by-law enforcement strategy.

Luthuli stressed that the lack of proper by-law enforcement in the Randburg CBD has become a growing concern.

“People just sell stuff everywhere. There’s no respect or adherence to by-laws. And when there’s no enforcement, it leads to litter, crime, businesses leaving the CBD and eventually urban decay,” he said.

He pointed out that the By-laws Management Committee (BMC) of the City of Johannesburg and JMPD play a crucial role in ensuring order in public spaces, a responsibility that many residents feel is not being fulfilled.

Luthuli said the RCF has set two major objectives:

1. A safe and crime-free Randburg, and
2. A clean Randburg.

“We want Randburg to be great again,” he added.

The meeting will also cover illegal immigration, the Randburg Precinct Management proposal, health service access, and the JOSHCO housing development on Selkirk Avenue.

Residents are encouraged to attend, ask questions, and contribute to shaping a safer and cleaner community.
