Led by Bernise Games and Junior Mqingwana, U9 hockey is still very much in its foundation phase at the school. They explained that their focus has been on building the basics and instilling a love for the game. “It’s been incredible to watch each player grow in confidence, discover her position, and then refine those skills into a strong and formidable team,” said Games. “The girls had an absolutely fantastic season, and it was their teamwork, humility, and constant passion for the game that ultimately led them to victory.”
He added that there were some nail-biting moments along the way, but each challenge only made them more determined to improve and succeed. “At this age, the girls are still so young, but their eagerness to learn and natural competitiveness shines through. While they always believed they had a chance, I don’t think they realised they could actually go all the way.”

The encouragement and confidence from both parents and coaches gave them the push they needed to truly own their place in the district. The girls team went undefeated throughout the season, starting in pool B, working their way to the top, reaching the quarterfinals, and ultimately triumphing across both pool A and B.
Red Sox also advanced to Best of the Best Tournament, where they will face the top teams in District 2, 8, 9, and 12.
This achievement speaks volumes about the strength of sports at the school, consistently invested in its hockey programme. The latest achievement highlights the skill and dedication of the players.
Owen Hurter and Matthew Thompson, Red Sox coaches, explained that for the boys, the victory has been a huge confidence booster, as they prepare to compete in the prestigious Best of the Best Tournament. “The school community could not be prouder,” said Thompson. “Achievements like this reinforce Rand Park Primary’s reputation for excellence on the sports field, while also instilling values of hard work, discipline, and teamwork in its learners.”
Hurter added that the teachers, parents, and fellow pupils have all celebrated the team’s success, knowing that the boys’ commitment has brought great honour to the school.
Sport plays a vital role in children’s development, and Rand Park Primary encourages participation at every level. The hockey triumph has not only boosted hockey; it has inspired the new and developing players to get involved, knowing that they too can reach great heights.
