Ward councillor worries about the state of Randburg Fire Station

Lucinda Harman, Ward 102 councillor, conducted an oversight visit at the Randburg Fire Station and is not happy with the conditions.

Ward 102 councillor Lucinda Harman is not pleased with the conditions at the Randburg Fire Station. Harman recently conducted an oversight visit at the station, and the findings are alarming.

From broken and jammed roller doors to firefighters without proper personal protective equipment (PPE), the station is nowhere near ready to offer services to the residents. The telephone lines have been dead for years, cutting off vital communication. These failures have delayed emergency response times and placed both firefighters and residents in danger.

The ward councillor revealed that the fire station is also in a property that is owned by MultiChoice.

“We’ve got emergency service facilities in privately owned ground. Now, why does Joburg Property Company allow this to happen? That’s the biggest question mark always in this world.”

To add to her concerns is a broken window at the station. “That is the level at which this place has been run down. Once a proud fire utility. Now, this actually looks way worse than how it was. The telephone lines don’t work in and out of the facility. There has been a fire twice down the road, and residents couldn’t get a hold of the station. They brought fire trucks all the way from Cosmo City, which is a little far away.

The ward councillor calls for urgent repairs to the roller doors, immediate reconnection of telephone lines, and proper PPE to be supplied to the frontline civil servants.

The City of Johannesburg was sent questions, and its reply will be published once made available.
