Randburg FC and Crusaders share a point in a much-anticipated derby

Randburg derby ends in a 2–2 draw after a dramatic match at the Randburg Sports Complex.

Drama, drama and more drama in the Randburg derby as Randburg Football Club locked horns with their arch-rivals, Crusaders Football Club.

The two clubs were meeting for the second time in the Rand Central Local Football Association (RCLFA) senior premier league. The game lived up to expectations as the teams shared the points in a four-goal thriller. The hosts, Randburg, came into the game on the back of a loss against Panorama. Crusaders also wanted nothing but the win after they suffered their first loss of the season against Scara Young Aces.

Both teams provided a spectacle for the spectators. Crusaders showed no respect to the hosts, especially in the first 45 minutes. They enjoyed more possession and were a threat going forward, using the skills of their striker and captain, Thabiso Phakedi.

Phakedi used his aerial strength to flick and hold balls in front of Randburg FC’s defence.

His hard work paid off as the host’s goalkeeper committed a silly foul in the box and Crusaders were awarded a penalty. Machel Nyandoro stepped up to take the spot kick, which was saved by the keeper, but fortunately, the ball fell to Nyandoro’s feet, and he scored to give Crusaders the lead (1–0).

The visitors continued to press forward and suffocated the home side’s defence. Phakedi punished Randburg FC again with a header to give his side a well-deserved 2–0 lead before half-time.

The Randburg side came back and took the game to the visitors in the second half. They made a few changes and started to press high and have more possession.

Defending desperately, Crusaders made costly errors, and a penalty was awarded to Randburg. Mfundo Mkhize calmly picked a spot, and his goal brought the home side back in the match (2–1).

Oozing with confidence, the home side shifted to gear two. Joshua Roux found an equaliser shortly as Crusaders again failed to clear their lines (2–2). The visitors created a few clear opportunities after that, but were let down by poor finishing.

The game ended in a 2-2 stalemate, but it will be a confidence booster for Randburg as they continue their fight to climb the log ladder. Crusaders remain without a win this year.
