Councillor urges Fontainebleau residents to sign petition to fence Fontainebleau Park

Ward 104 councillor Emi Koekemoer is urging residents to support and sign the petition to fence off Fontainebleau Park to make it safe for them, and everyone else, again.

Fontainebleau Park is a vital community park, which is now in a state of alarming disrepair and lawlessness.

With this in mind, Ward 104 councillor Emi Koekemoer has issued a petition to residents to sign for the park to be fenced. The petition demands immediate fencing of the park by the City of Johannesburg in the absence of visible law enforcement.

Koekemoer explained that, as residents, they are constantly faced with criminal activities, illegal structures, and illegal dumping, deterring the community from making use of the local facility. The park is also in close proximity to schools, posing a real danger to learners. Residents walk inside the park and are exposed to overgrown grass and vagrants.

The park was also recently visited by the DA’s Johannesburg mayoral candidate Helen Zille, during an oversight campaign in Randburg.

“Residents will know,” said Koekemoer, “for many years the excuse that we keep getting is that there is no funding and no resources for visible law enforcement. Now, what we are saying is, in the absence of that, can we not fence off the park? At least that will help deter some criminal elements, and it will create a place of safety that the community can use.”

Residents across Fontainebleau are encouraged to get involved and sign the petition today. “That is my plea to residents: Take action now. Support our petition to fence off Fontainebleau Park. This is your space. Let’s reclaim it together.”

Questions were sent to Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo regarding the state of the park, and their reply will be published once made available.
